Crown’s latest golf project sees the install team on a fortnight’s fitout at Fairhaven GC, St Annes, Sited on Lancashire’s renowned `Golf Coast’, Fairhaven is a qualifying venue for both The Open Championship and The Senior Open so changing provision is vital in portraying the quality and image the industry expects of clubs in the region.
“The install is a little out of the ordinary for golf,” states project manager Spencer Grimwood. “It’s a large order – 274 golf bag lockers in the men’s area and 125 in the ladies changing room, with only a smattering of holdall units. ”Working through interior designers and the main contractor, Crown is providing flat-face doors, with machining lines and numbers embedded in black. “Smart and stylish,” adds Spencer.
'Tee off the New Year with refreshed changing rooms', Crown’s urging, as another wave of refurbishments across its supply sectors beckons. “Golf lockers can last a lifetime,” says project manager Spencer Grimwood, “but the sector has to adapt to attract a fresh demographic into the clubhouse.” Exciting designs are being introduced into traditional changing rooms as golf’s general managers spearhead a transformation in provision that includes everything from food and drink and fine dining to venues for celebrations. “All part of attracting the family to golf,” he adds.
Crown has completed a major refreshment of Nizels Golf & Country Club, Tonbridge, delivering new locker doors across its health and fitness changing facilities at the 18-hole championship course. More news and images of the fitout soon.
Last year’s Independent Hotel Show proved a transformational one for Crown. The two-day event was bristling with operators and owners eager to progress spa developments as the sector seeks to provide year-round destinations for local regional and national visitors.
“IHS was certainly a success for us,” states Crown project manager Sam Palmer. Sector buoyancy in spa developments and stand interest over the two days prompted us to book for 2019.” Independent hotels across Britain are riding a wave of demand for spa days and mini breaks that shows little sign of abating, Sam adds. “Crown is currently talking with owners, interior designers and contractors on some really innovative projects that raise the bar of provision.”
The locker partnership with cycle studio operator Psycle is still wheeling ahead as the locker specialists install lockers at the fourth site. Since opening its first site in London’s Mortimer Street in 2014, Psycle has specified Crown for locker provision in stripped-back, minimalist styling. Canary Wharf followed, then Shoreditch and Clapham, where Crown fitted matt-white clothes lockers in male and female changing areas as well as a dozen in the waiting area for members arriving already kitted for exercise.
The success of Mortimer Street has sparked an expansion of the site, with Crown recently fitting three-tier male and female changing areas, with a stack of lockers in two waiting areas. Psycle have rung the changes on locking systems, says Spencer Grimwood, the Crown project manager dedicated to the operator’s requirements from day one. “They wanted to veer away from the digital locking systems specified on previous projects,” he explains. “If digital locks fail, we have to take off the door, whereas the mechanical combination locks we’ve fitted in the Mortimer Street extension need less maintenance. There’s nothing to break and no batteries to replace.”
Members and guests at Village Hotels’ new Bristol compact footprint destination can charge their mobile devices in their changing room lockers while they enjoy the facilities.
Crown has fitted USB charging points in some 36 lockers the furniture manufacturer installing for the national hotel operator in what is its second compact site, opened a year after Portsmouth opened. “The charging points are positioned at the back of the holdall and valuables lockers to a plug and play system,” explains Spencer Grimwood, Crown Project Manager. “Just bring your own charging cable and you’re ready to plug your device into the Type A or Type B USB port,” he adds.

Leaders in West Country hospitality for more than 50 years, owners Brend Hotel Group brought in the specialists to handle spa changing and treatment room provision at its flagship North Devon destination.
Fitted throughout in characterful Grain of Nebraska Oak, clothes lockers include popular RFID Digilocks, while wet and dry vanities are surfaced in crisp white Corian tops, with upholstered seating adding a touch of class, alongside disabled changing area and washrooms.
Guests will be able to enjoy spa treatments from the exclusive Kerstin Florian and IS Clinical brands plus the opportunity for full workouts in the new state of the art gym.
“This is a job we can be really proud of,” says Crown’s project manager Sam Palmer. “The hotel is beautifully situated with great sea views and the new Source Spa is a facility to die for. A lovely project to be involved with.”
Crown’s fitout team enjoyed a grand day at Nottingham High School recently, installing the changing room specialists’ latest order there.

After a successful 2017 show, changing room specialists Crown Sports Lockers have committed to the Independent Hotel Show for the seventh consecutive year.
Tapping into the vibrant hotel refurbishment sector, Crown will display elements of their tailored storage solutions in various finishes at the popular event, to run from 16 to 17 October at Olympia London, including on-trend super-matt examples with anti-fingerprint properties, different locker styles and locking systems.
A registered Made in Britain manufacturer, Crown has clinched a spate of hotel leisure projects nationally since the last event involving the addition of spa and fitness facilities at both standalone country hotels and small groups.
Just over a year ago, Crown completed an extensive project at the prestigious Elan Spa, Mallory Court Country House Hotel & Spa, which included fitting out male and female changing areas and several treatment rooms.
Fitouts at Beyond Escapes, St Michael’s Hotel and Park Inn Heathrow have followed to further extend Crown’s inroad into this sector.

Another self-install consignment is on its way to Ibstock Place School, Roehampton, as the independent co-educational day school continues to expand provision.
The order of 50 full height single tier lockers supplements several previous deliveries to meet the needs of the school as further space becomes available.
Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Edinburgh, has turned to Crown Sports Lockers once again to upgrade changing provision at the luxury destination - this time to refresh the male and female areas with new locker doors, panels and vanity shelves.
“The locker carcases were still in good condition so did not need replacing,” says Crown project manager Spencer Grimwood. “Refreshing older changing facilities can provide a cost-effective option for sites seeking create more modern interior designs without resorting to a full refurbishment.”
One of Crown’s largest-ever self-install locker consignments is ready to roll.
Airdrie Golf Club, near Glasgow, took custody of the order in the teeth of the `Beast from the East` but the club has advanced swiftly to ensure its new changing rooms are complete for the new season.
Digital locking is so convenient for clubs concerned about key management issues. By and large, the golf sector prefers to keep to key operated lockers, with £1 coin operated ones for visitors.
"There's less risk of key loss in golf," states Crown Sports Lockers Project Manager Spencer Grimwood, "and also it may not be worth the extra expenditure of digital locking if keys fit the bill."
Award-winning leisure operator The Club Company, for one, is sticking with the simplicity of keys across its estate of golf and fitness clubs and Crown is midway through refitting coin-op lockers to take the new £1 coin at six of its sites.
After fitting solar panels to the roof of its manufacturing plant 18 months ago, Crown Sports Lockers is fitting them to its dedicated spray shop nearby.
The bespoke installation gives Crown capacity to deliver products in a myriad colours and also apply fire retardant, hard-wearing lacquer coats to products required for sensitive areas.
ISO 14001 certified, Crown is committed to heightening its environmental credentials and is planning to install woodburning heat sources at the Paignton headquarters.
Meanwhile, a new Combilift four-way directional forklift will introduce more manoeuvrability and efficiency when handling large consignments of board, Crown say.

The new facilities include lockers, vanities, bench seating and cubicles and will complement the luxurious provision at the four-star destination, the only Elemis SkinLab in the region and winner of the Best Spa in Cornwall award.
